Tomato Talk

by @ngie on August 7, 2010

In a land where “fatty” and “skinny” are common terms of endearment one comes to expect the blurts and seemingly tactless verbal observations. The responses to the idea of our adoption have been flavorful.  It has been interesting to watch the public interact with our family.

Today Tyler and Kaitlynn came with me to the market. We were making the stops at our regular vendors and getting the usual young child adoration remarks. Bolivians dote on babies better than any culture I know. We had one last stop to make: tomatoes.

All bagged up and paid for the lady smiled at my two. I smiled back at her and looked down at them.

“Are those your kids?” She asked.

“Yes, they are mine,” I answered, both of us still smiling.

“They don’t look very much like each other.”

“No, they don’t.”

Everyone still smiling I took their pudgy hands and we walked away amidst over zealous “byes” and “chaus” by all. My heart was happy. I kept thinking to myself that she could have just as easily said that one of them didn’t look like me. I didn’t feel it was necessary to explain that one of my children is adopted and the other not. Let her continue to think that they are simply siblings that do not look like each other.

It is uncanny how many people who are fully aware that Kaitlynn is adopted have told me how much she and I look alike. Now even perfect strangers catch the resemblance and even assume she is my child.

Good thing they do, because, she is my child.
