Feed the Birds

By @ngie

Friday we took some left over gingerbread and fed the birds at the plaza named after Cristopher Columbus. It was a bright day and we enjoyed our time in the fresh air very much. I imagine the birds enjoyed it too. This song was in my mind the whole morning:

Feed the Birds

(From the movie ‘Mary Poppins’ written by The Brothers Four)

Cathedral bell tower

Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul’s,
The little old bird woman comes.
In her own special way to the people she calls,
“Come, buy my bags full of crumbs.”
“Come feed the little birds, show them you care,
And you’ll be glad if you do –
Their young ones are hungry, their nests are so bare;
All it takes is tuppence from you.”

At the plaza

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.

Here they come

“Feed the birds,” that’s what she cries,
While overhead, her birds fill the skies.
All around the cathedral, the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares;
Although you can’t see it, you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares.
Though her words are simple and few,
Listen, listen, she’s calling to you –

Pigeon eating gingerbread

“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.”

Timothy and Gabrielle

Though her words are simple and few,
Listen, listen, she’s calling to you –

Raimy

“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.”

One of my students is entranced anytime he hears Mary Poppins music! It’s one way we calm him when he’s WAY TOO overstimulated!!

What a great idea for the left over gingerbread ghetto!! (I would be afraid the ginger would cause the birds to explode like they say rice does!) I will pray that there are no massive pigeon tragedies in Cochabamba in the next few days!

That is my favorite song from Mary Poppins. And WAY too short to do it justice. Beautiful. The pics are gorgeous.

Libby – I wondered the same thing about the effects… oops! I think that they will be ok though; they eat every other piece of junk that people throw their way.

Annie – Thanks! I was please with how the pics turned out too. I love my new camera!

Alece – You and your pigeons and Roo and her geese; there has got to be a scientific name for fear of fowl. Sure enough… I googled it… Ornithophobia. So you are an ornithophobic. Are you glad to know that? :-)

Mandie – It was a fun family time.

Danielle – You dissed Starbucks the bird?! Shame… :-)

Michelle – It’s a great part.

Those are some great pictures. Glad that I could be a part of it. I would not have ever thought that the birds would have liked gingerbread.

DaRonn – I wonder if birds have taste buds? I was glad to have you there, too.

Oh sure, there are the dull and uninteresting tasks that we all have to do, but mixed up in there with all the ‘have-to’ there is a wealth of ‘get-to’ that drives my being. (more...)
