Travel log: Thursday, November 20, 2008

I boarded the plane. I flew to Peru. We have eaten in a fancy restaurant. We have been surrounded by breathtaking mountainous views. We are checked into a wonderful hotel. We have seen an amazing city full of culture and life.

But…

And that ‘but’ is pretty enormous. Brace yourself.

But I haven’t seen my husband yet. What!? What are you talking about Angie!? I am still in La Paz. I will save you the grueling details about our boomerang airplane, troublesome immigration agents, protesting passengers, and Burger King offered to vegetarians of the flight that took off, doubled back in Peruvian air 10 minutes from landing, was rescheduled, was delayed, then cancelled, then postponed and finally re-rescheduled for tomorrow morning.

The airline acted as I expected them to. The disgruntled clients acted as I expected them to. The result was a promise that the 40 of us will fly to Cuzco tomorrow morning at 9AM along with a night with dinner and breakfast at a five star hotel (that actually feels like a five star hotel) and shuttling to and from the airport.

I kissed my kids and hopped in the cab Wednesday night at 7PM. It is now encroaching upon 10PM on Thursday night and I have yet to see my husband. About 12 more hours of this journey - I am hoping. That will make a total of … oh, why do I even torture myself with the math? My brain is a bit fried so I am not going to calculate. I will focus on the fact that there are less hours left of my trip then I have behind me. I will see my man; I will.

Let’s talk about some good stuff before I put this tired head to bed.

  • I got to see Illimani. It is a mountain here in La Paz. Lovely.
  • Of the 40 passengers all corners of the globe represented which made for some interesting conversations. We had: Taiwan, England, Japan, Spain, Brazil, The States, Poland, Peru and maybe some others.
  • The hotel starts serving breakfast at 4:30AM which means I will actually get to eat a bit before we are picked up at 6:30AM.

You’ll like Cusco. It is quite the place–very hilly, lots of steps everywhere, and the streets twist like a maze. It’s gorgeous. When I was there we found a tiny pizza restaurant. I don’t remember what it was called or where it was. Haha. That’s probably not much help. But it you find a tiny little pizza place–it basically has a miniature counter, a clay oven, and two picnic tables–check it out. We got the most amazing pizza there. I know it doesn’t sound very “Peruvian,” but it’s not like any other pizza we’ve had and was absolutely delicious.
Are you going to try the guinea pig? I didn’t get the chance while I was there, and I regret it…
I hope you have fun on your Peru trip. It’s an amazing country.

I’m praying that you’re VERY close to boarding a plane right now and that EVERYTHING goes very smoothly today and WITHOUT incident. We’ll all breathe a big sigh of relief once you get that welcoming hug from your dear hubby!!!

Hang in there chica!! You’re almost there!!

Oh my goodness you’re kidding? wow well thank God your facebook status says you have now arrived! All is well on the home front, the kids miss you and pray for you guys EVERY day and at EVERY meal. You really have such sweet kids! We are going to the ‘amusement’ park and bringing a picnic tomorrow and to Globos for ice-cream later on! I think I’m more excited than the kids! Enjoy yourselves also!
