Dick and Rick Hoyt form the father and son Ironman Triathlon team.
It is not that we are unable, usually. It is that we are unwilling.
“Once the commitment is clear, you do what you can, not what you can’t. The heart regulates the hands.” (2 Corinthians 8:12 in the Message version)
We can do much more than we allow ourselves to. It might be painful… at first. Push through.

I’ve seen this father & his son on TV and on many videos and each time it brings tears to my eyes. Maybe it’s cuz I do what I do…or maybe I am able to see God’s potential in the son that other’s can not. Either way…the message they speak in their daily lives is so powerful! The love of a father for his son…or the love of a Father for His sons and daughters!!! Truly this pair is a picture of the Heavenly Father’s love for us.
Amazing…just amazing!!
@Libby – A few weeks ago one of the members of our church, a Bolivian, brought this story to my attention. Brings me to tears every time too.
I blogged about these guys a couple years ago.

@Thumbuddy – It will be interesting to follow their story throughout the coming years. As I have been looking into it I heard an interview that said that the racing was the sons idea… wow. That just speaks volumes to me about the unquenchable nature of the human spirit and the power that resides in the human soul for seeing dreams to fruition.
Wow, @ngie, this was so inspiring, thank you so much.
What a motivational example.
I liked the verse from The Message Bible too – “The heart regulates the hands,” the whole idea of resolving something, and allowing that resolve to focus what we do. Great post, thank you.
@Birgit – That was the phrase from that verse that spoke to me the most as well. You are right when you say that this father son team is a motivational example. I feel it is so important to see others doing marvelous things to help us stay focused on what God has placed in our hands to do. Bless you girl!
I have seen this as well – and purposefully didn’t view it this morning because I knew I’d be crying. (And I’m trying to eat breakfast, so … that may not have worked as well.) This is so amazingly inspirational. When I watch them, I can’t help but hear the only answer possible if the father is asked why he does this for his son. “I love him.” And to think Jesus said, “If you, being earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more ….”
And now I’m crying anyway. :_)
@Annie – … how much more… you are so right.
such a good message… push through.
@Amy – yes ma’am.
love this video…
@Mandy – yes, me too
thanks for the reminder to “push through”.
@Alece – there is a fine balance between the inhaling and exhaling the pushing and the resting.
