A Colossal Book

by @ngie on June 20, 2008

Recently a friend challenged her readers to recognize a moment when God surprised them. This happened to me this morning. As I was setting out to do my morning stuff I was reminded of a conversation I had with another friend about my favorite book of the bible. I had told her it was Colossians. She asked why. I gave her an answer and then she replied that she was motivated to go back and read that little book again. I used to read it all the time in my teen years. I bounced between Colossians, Ruth, the Proverbs, Joshua and the Timothy books. But Colossians always grabbed me the most. So this morning I was surprised by the fact that I had never read it in my new Message bible, and actually it had been quite a few years since I read it for fun, not as part of a reading plan. I was so excited that I dug right in. It was phenomenal! So much fun! I have a feeling I will be spending some time here. A couple passages before I sign off…

You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. (2.8-10)

But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust… (1.21-23)

To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less. (1.26-29)

There are so many more things I could say about this book. I will end with one last quote and a question.

Not many of you have met me face-to-face, but that doesn’t make a difference. Know that I’m on your side, right alongside you. You’re not in this alone. (2.1)

What is your favorite book of the bible and why?

Paul’s my man. I’d have to say 1 Thessalonians is one of my favorites… but I bounce between most of his letters. Ephesians, 2 Thessalonians and 2 Corinthians are up there, too.
1 Thessalonians 2:4 “but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we declare it, not to please people but God, who examines our hearts.”

I love the new weblog! Looks great and like it will be a lot of fun! I know I haven´t been commenting a lot lately online, but I have been reading and it´s good to keep up with stuff¨on that side of the ocean.

Favorite book? That’s a hard one! I would probably have to say though – just from the fact that I have more verses memorized from it than any other book – that Philippians would win. I has such great theme (joy), such an incredible theology of Christ (chp. 2) and such great practical living advice (chp. 4).

Hi @ngie, I’m loving this new site, it’s great! :) …. And, I read Colossians again after what you said :) . You are so right, it is amazing! It’s a small book but it is packed with incredible insights about Jesus and about being in relationship with Him. I love the verse that says: “as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” 3:12.
Favourite book? There’s so much I love, but I always find myself being drawn back to the Psalms. I think it’s the amazing range of emotions and experiences that are written about, and also the passion for God and the worship of who He is.
God bless :)
